I didn’t intend to post avant-garde guitar pieces two weeks in a row. But I’ve been playing lots of guitar lately while completing my solo album. So, here we are. And, to be fair, this week’s composition (read: improvisation) is hell and gone from last week’s prepared electric guitar wall of sound. This is acoustic guitar. One so stark, minimalist, and off-kilter that it would make the late great John Cage proud. Cage, along with the also great (but not late) David Sylvian, was the primary musical inspiration behind the song “Red Bayou” from my forthcoming album. An exploration of traditional Delta blues through the lens of my life experiences. Experiences far different from those of the late great artists who pioneered the genre. I believe the best art of any medium is rooted in what the artist knows firsthand. That’s always been my approach to creativity.
